For Your Editorial Calendar: June Engagement Ideas

Summer is here!  I don’t feel like spending a lot of time on the computer when it’s this nice out in the DC area, and I bet you don’t, either.

But you’ve still got to populate those blogs, Twitter streams, and Facebook Pages with engaging content, don’t you?  Yes, you do.  No vacations for social media and marketing managers!

So keep your camera handy this month (you know photos and video get the highest engagement) and borrow some of these ideas for your updates this month.

Feel free to share your own June content ideas in the comments, why don’cha?

Friday, June 1: Get your editorial calendar ready!  Here’s our  June 2012 Editorial Calendar  you can download and customize, if you don’t have one handy.

You’ve worked hard all week.  Why not knock off and go to a free concert or a free movie?  Summer in DC is full of both.  Enjoy jazz in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, each Friday this summer, from 5 pm – 8:30 pm. Follow @ngadc on Twitter.

Or check out the free Friday night movies — each is set in Washington, DC and has a political theme — screening at 8 pm at Gateway Park in Rosslyn (Arlington, VA on Lee Highway near the Key Bridge) Follow @RosslynVA on Twitter.

Got kids? Then buy your tickets now for Encore Stage’s production of Charlotte’s Web, showing on weekends tonight through June 10.  Fletcher Prince client Jennifer Reising serves on the board of this worthy Arlington, VA children’s theater, and all the productions my son and I have seen have been fantastic.  Like Encore Stage on Facebook to see production photos and get updates. P.S. They have summer theater classes for kids!

Saturday, June 2 and Sunday June 3Dupont Kalorama Museum Walk.  There will be crowds, but museums like the Phillips Collection and the Textile Museum are free today.  Can’t beat that with a stick.   Follow The Phillips Collection on Twitter @PhillipsMuseum and The Textile Museum on Twitter: @TextileMuseum.

Tuesday, June 5  The Transit of Venus will be visible at sunset in North America.  Everyone will be talking about it.  Venus will slip between the Earth and the Sun, forming a small, black dot on the sun as it travels in front of the son for nearly 7 hours.  This is one way scientists measure the size of the solar system, and this event will not happen until 2117.  Follow @TOV2012 on Twitter and use hashtags #TransitofVenus or #VenusTransit in your tweets.

Don’t LOOK at the sky, though! You could damage your eyes. Watch it online on the Slooh Space Camera and follow them on Twitter @slooh and check out SLOOH on Pinterest).

Wednesday, June 6.  Today, the U.S. celebrates the 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy, a true turning point in WWII.  My mother’s cousin Paul served there and saw his best friend die there.  Freedom is not free!  Use hashtag #USArmy and follow them on Twitter @USArmy.

Friday, June 8,  Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10.  Celebrate Fairfax (as in Fairfax County, VA) at this fun fair that features rides, fresh squeezed lemonade, model trains, and some really good concerts.  80s rocker-lady and fellow Richmonder Pat Benatar and local favorites The Legwarmers are appearing this year.  How fun is that?  Follow @CelebrateFFX.

Tuesday, June 12.  Have you been attending our monthly Network-and-Lunch events held at different locations in the DC area each month?  If not, you are seriously missing out!  I hope you can join us for our June event at 12 Noon.  We are meeting at Spice Xing in Rockville, MD and three of the smartest people I know in PR will be there: Heathere Evans-Keenan, Deborah Brody, and Donna Vincent Roa.  That is a lot of charisma at one table!  So, you don’t want to miss that.  Follow Heathere on Twitter, Deborah on Twitter, and Donna on Twitter.

Have plans for this evening?  The U.S. Navy Band will serenade you with free concerts tonight and select Tuesday evenings at 8 pm at the Navy Memorial Plaza (Navy Memorial/Archives Metro stop). Follow @usnavyband on Twitter.

Thursday, June 14: Today is Flag Day in the United States.  That’s a photo op, if I ever saw one!  Find ways to honor Old Glory on your Facebook Page today.

Oh, and I’m going to see Keane in concert tonight.  That’s  not relevant, or anything. I’m just bragging :)

Friday, June 15: Today is the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL in Fairfax County, VA!  Do you remember how excited you used to be as the clock ticked down the final minutes?  Kids are going to be crazy-happy around 3 pm today.  Traditionally, I take my son out for ice cream to celebrate.  Then I am going to make him work for Fletcher Prince this summer.  Only…he doesn’t know it yet.  Don’t forget to congratulate the kiddos on Twitter and Facebook!

Sunday, June 17.  Today is Father’s Day.  Show them some love on social media.

Tuesday, June 19.  I am giving a presentation on social media at the annual meeting of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance today.   Do you need a speaker for a meeting this summer?  I bring great hand-outs :)

Wednesday, June 20. Today is the first day of Summer.  But who are we kidding?  Everyone knows the first day of summer falls on Memorial Day Weekend, when the pools open.

Thursday, June 21. Happy Birthday to my sister and first Fletcher Prince client, Beverly Sill :)

Thursday, June 21 – Sunday, June 24.  The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the nation’s largest Arab American civil rights organization, is holding their annual meeting on Capitol Hill.  Shameless plug: Fletcher Prince clients Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain and the Bahrain Coordinating Committee will be exhibiting.  Among the speakers will be film maker Michael Moore.  Follow @ADCTweets and use hashtag #adconv.

Saturday, June 30.  Created by Mashable in 2010, Social Media Day is a global celebration of the technological advancements that enable people to connect and have their voices be heard. Follow @mashSMDay on Twitter and use hashtag #SMDay.  To celebrate Social Media Day, Fletcher Prince will be holding a free blogging clinic — but it might be at the beach!  I have been dreaming of a “Blog-at-the-Beach” event for years…stay tuned for details…
